South Luangwa National Park is the spiritual home of the African walking safari, a tradition born here in the 1950s when Norman Carr first led guests on foot through the Luangwa Valley. The park covers 9,050 km² of exceptionally diverse habitat along the Luangwa River and is among Africa's most productive wildlife destinations: one of the continent's highest leopard densities, outstanding lion, wild dog, hyena, elephant, hippo, and buffalo. The legendary night drive programme, operated by private camps on exclusive traversing rights, reveals a nocturnal world of civets, genets, honey badgers, and lion hunts unavailable in most African reserves.
