About Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's most iconic natural sanctuaries: a collapsed volcanic caldera rising from the Crater Highlands of northern Tanzania. Its 260 km² floor supports around 25,000 large animals including the world's highest density of lion, significant black rhino populations, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and wildebeest, all contained within a natural amphitheatre that makes for one of Africa's most reliable Big Five safari experiences. The surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also encompasses Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakeys discovered human ancestors dating back 1.8 million years, adding paleoanthropological depth to the wildlife spectacle.
