12-Day Namibia Grand Safari: Skeleton Coast, Damaraland & Etosha

A full day exploring the Skeleton Coast wilderness. Morning guided walk along the beach past rusting shipwrecks, bleached whale bones and desiccated seal carcasses: a landscape of eerie, magnificent desolation. Afternoon: 4×4 excursion into the coastal dunes in search of brown hyena, black-backed jackal, and the surprisingly rich desert wildlife that thrives in the Benguela-fed ecosystem. Morning visit to Cape Cross, home to one of the world's largest Cape fur seal colonies: over 100,000 animals on a single beach, a cacophony of sound and smell that is one of Namibia's most unforgettable experiences. Join Save the Rhino Trust trackers on a morning foot-tracking safari for Namibia's free-roaming desert black rhino across the Palmwag Concession. The tracking can cover significant distances over rocky terrain and is one of the most active and rewarding wildlife experiences in Africa. These rhino are not fenced or habituated: the encounter is entirely wild.

Morning vehicle and foot search for Damaraland's desert-adapted elephant in the ancient riverbeds of the Huab and Ugab valleys. Afternoon at Twyfelfontein UNESCO World Heritage Site: over 2,500 engravings and paintings by San Bushmen, depicting the wildlife of a wetter era: lions, elephants, rhino, and giraffe carved into smooth red sandstone.

Morning at leisure, then drive east to Etosha National Park. En route, pass through the Hoanib Valley and the sparse thornbush savannah of central Namibia. Arrive at Etosha's western Anderson Gate and begin an afternoon game drive en route to your lodge.

A complete day of game viewing in Etosha. The park's permanent waterholes draw an extraordinary diversity of wildlife in the dry season. Your guide positions the vehicle at the most productive waterholes during peak activity hours: lions at the mudflats in the early morning, black rhino at the floodlit Okaukuejo waterhole after dark. Afternoon drive through the western section's woodland and open pan.

Cross Etosha to the eastern sector, where denser bush provides a different wildlife palette. Cheetah, leopard and wild dog are more often seen in the east, while the vast white expanse of the Etosha Pan itself is best appreciated from the central waterholes. Late afternoon back at the Ongava private reserve for a guided walking safari.

Depart Etosha and drive south through Namibia's vast interior to Sossusvlei. The drive covers some of the most dramatic and empty landscapes in Africa: red gravel plains, isolated inselbergs, and the occasional oryx or springbok. Arrive at the Sesriem gate in the evening, in time for a sunset walk to the canyon.

Pre-dawn departure to climb the dunes before the heat. The Namib Desert dunes are the oldest on Earth: these ancient formations were here 55 million years before humans. Climb Dune 45 or the steep face of Big Daddy for a panoramic sunrise view. Walk across the white pan to Deadvlei and its extraordinary dead camel thorn trees. Return to lodge by mid-morning.

A day in the broader Namib-Naukluft landscape: guided nature walks in the gravel plains, tracking the extraordinary adaptations of desert plants and animals. The NamibRand Nature Reserve, adjacent to Sossusvlei, was declared Africa's first Dark Sky Reserve: at night, the Milky Way is so bright it casts shadows. Stargazing with a guide after dinner.
