10-Day Namibia Guided Safari: Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland & Etosha

Your guide meets you at Hosea Kutako International Airport for the drive into Windhoek, usually around 40–60 minutes depending on traffic. Namibia's compact capital has German colonial buildings, restaurants and craft markets, with time to explore if your arrival allows. Settle in and rest before tomorrow's early start. In the evening, meet your guide for dinner and talk through the route, driving days and places you will visit.

Leave after breakfast for the drive southwest into the Namib, allowing about 5–6 hours on mostly gravel roads, with stops along the way. At Spreetshoogte Pass, the highlands drop away and the desert opens out below you. Stop at Solitaire for lunch and its well-known apple crumble, then continue to Sesriem. As the afternoon heat eases, walk into Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge carved by the Tsauchab River. The rock walls offer welcome shade and a first close look at the desert landscape.

Start early to see the red dunes as the light changes across their slopes. Sossus Dune Lodge guests can reach Sossusvlei before sunrise, and Little Kulala uses its exclusive-use gate; guests at &Beyond travel from its private desert reserve with timings governed by the public gate hours. Choose the demanding Big Daddy climb, a shorter walk on Dune 45, or time photographing the dunes from below. Continue to Deadvlei, where dark camel-thorn trees stand on a white clay pan against the red sand. Return to your lodge before the hottest part of the day and spend the afternoon resting. An optional scenic flight can be arranged. If you would like a hot-air balloon flight, we plan it at sunrise and adjust the dune excursion around it, subject to weather and availability.

Drive northwest through the Namib, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn and passing through the Kuiseb Canyon landscape. Allow about 5–6 hours of driving, with extra time for lunch and photo stops. Near Walvis Bay, the desert meets the Atlantic and the air often turns cool and misty. Continue to Swakopmund in the late afternoon. After checking in, take a walk along the promenade or settle into a seaside restaurant for dinner. These two coastal nights break up the journey north to Damaraland.

Join a morning catamaran cruise on Walvis Bay lagoon. Look for Cape fur seals, dolphins and pelicans, with flamingos often seen along the lagoon's shores. Marine wildlife varies from day to day; seals sometimes approach the boats. Cruise refreshments typically include oysters and sparkling wine, with the final offering confirmed by the operator. Return to Swakopmund for lunch at your own expense. Spend the afternoon exploring town, or choose an optional Sandwich Harbour 4×4 excursion, living desert tour or quad-biking trip. Optional excursions are booked separately and timed around the cruise.

Drive north along the coast to Cape Cross, home to a large Cape fur seal colony. Numbers vary with the season, but the calls of the seals and the busy shoreline make this a memorable stop. Turn inland past the Brandberg into Damaraland, allowing around 5–6 hours of driving plus visits and breaks. The scenery changes to rocky hills, flat-topped mountains and dry riverbeds lined with ana trees. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon and take in the valley views as the sun goes down.

Set out early on a vehicle excursion to look for desert-adapted elephants along the Huab and Aba-Huab river systems. These are African elephants adapted to life with scattered water and food sources, travelling long distances through the dry landscape. Finding them is never guaranteed. Later, visit Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of Africa's largest collections of rock engravings. A local guide explains the animal figures and the people who created them. Visit the nearby Organ Pipes basalt formations and Burnt Mountain if time allows. The order of the day depends on elephant movements and your lodge's location.

Drive northeast towards Etosha, allowing around 4–5 hours depending on your lodge and stops. Enter through Andersson Gate for the southern waterholes, where wildlife gathers around available water during the dry season. After lunch, begin your first game drive around the Okaukuejo area. Look for elephants, giraffes, gemsbok, springbok and zebras, and watch the shade and scrub for lions. Stay inside the park at Okaukuejo or on the nearby Ongava private reserve, according to your chosen accommodation.

Spend a full day exploring Etosha's western and central waterholes, choosing a route around Okaukuejo, Nebrownii, Gemsbokvlakte and Olifantsbad according to conditions. If the route and park access allow, visit the Etosha Lookout for a view across the white pan. Your guide adjusts the day as animal activity shifts with the heat and season. The dry months generally draw more wildlife to the waterholes; the greener months bring birdlife and newborn animals, with game more widely dispersed. In the evening, Okaukuejo guests can watch the floodlit waterhole after dark. Ongava guests return to their private reserve, where waterhole viewing and any additional lodge activities depend on the selected property's arrangements.

Leave Etosha for the journey south to Windhoek, allowing roughly 5–6 hours to the city with breaks, plus the onward airport transfer and check-in time. Stop for lunch along the way, with a visit to Okahandja's craft market if your flight schedule permits. A short final game drive is possible only when there is sufficient time; the airport connection comes first. We check the day's timings before you book an evening departure from Hosea Kutako Airport. An optional light-aircraft transfer can be quoted separately, or an extra night in Windhoek added for an earlier onward flight.
