14-Day Rwanda, Amboseli, Lewa & Maasai Mara Safari

Your driver meets you at Kigali International Airport and takes you to your hotel. Settle in, rest after the flight and go through the coming days with your guide. The city tour is scheduled after your return from Musanze on Day 4, so this first evening is yours to take at your own pace. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense; the hotel stay includes breakfast the following morning.

After breakfast, leave Kigali for the green hills around Musanze. Allow roughly two and a half to three hours for the road journey, plus stops. Have lunch, then visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund near Volcanoes National Park. The public gallery introduces the gorillas, the people studying them and the conservation work behind tomorrow's trek. Continue to your lodge with time to settle in, prepare your walking kit and enjoy dinner.

Have an early breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters for registration and your ranger briefing. The walk into the forest follows the gorillas' location that morning, so distance, terrain and walking time vary. Once your group reaches its allocated family, you have up to one hour to watch and photograph them under the ranger's guidance. Lunch is arranged around the trek, followed by a quiet afternoon at the lodge and dinner. The minimum age is 15; the park allocates trekking groups, so a private safari does not mean an exclusive gorilla visit.

Return to the park headquarters after breakfast for golden monkey tracking. Watch the troop feeding and moving through the bamboo, with your ranger setting the pace and explaining what you see. The minimum age for this trek is 12. Afterwards, drive back to Kigali for your city tour and a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, allowing time for its exhibitions and gardens. The return is planned around the Memorial's last entry; any necessary change of order is agreed when your flights and visit dates are confirmed. Overnight in Kigali. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense.

After breakfast, transfer to Kigali International Airport for your included scheduled flight to Nairobi. Your Kenyan driver meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and takes you to your hotel. The overnight separates this arrival from tomorrow's Wilson Airport departure, giving you time to rest and repack for the lighter safari-flight baggage allowance. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense. If the Kigali visit needs to move from Day 4, its timing is agreed with you before the flights are booked.

Have breakfast at your hotel, with an early or packed arrangement if required by the flight, then transfer to Wilson Airport. Fly to Amboseli, where your guide meets you for the drive to camp. Look across the plains for elephant families and, when the clouds clear, Kilimanjaro. Check in, have lunch and head out for an afternoon game drive around the wetlands and open country. Your collection and flight times are confirmed for the travel date.

Start early for the changing light over Amboseli and a chance of clear mountain views. Your guide follows the elephant herds and wetland tracks, taking time with buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and the birds around the swamps. Breakfast and lunch are arranged with camp around the drives. After a midday rest, return to the park and visit Observation Hill if the walking conditions suit you. The uphill path opens out to views across the basin. Dinner and a second night at your chosen camp.

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for your included flight journey to Lewa. The booked routing may connect through Wilson Airport or include intermediate stops; we confirm the itinerary and timings before ticketing. Meet your camp guide on arrival and continue to your accommodation, watching for wildlife along the way. Lunch is arranged around the flight schedule, followed by an afternoon drive when arrival time allows. Settle in for the first of three nights in Lewa.

Spend the morning exploring Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, which covers about 62,000 acres. Your guide looks for black and white rhinos and explains the conservation work that protects them, with Grevy's zebra, giraffe and other plains game sharing the landscape. Return for lunch, then take a guided bush walk when conditions allow. On foot, the focus shifts to tracks, plants and the smaller signs of wildlife that are easy to pass in a vehicle. Finish with an afternoon drive and dinner at camp.

Use your second full day for a longer drive through Lewa's open plains, with a packed lunch if arranged with camp, or choose separate morning and afternoon outings with a break at the lodge. There is time to stay with a sighting and follow the guide's observations as the day develops. Experienced riders can ask about an evening horse ride offered by either Kifaru House or Lewa Safari Camp. Riding is optional, charged separately and subject to the camp's assessment and availability. Return for your final dinner in Lewa.

Transfer from camp to Lewa's airstrip after breakfast for the scheduled flight journey to the Maasai Mara. Services can involve intermediate airstrips or a Wilson connection, so the route and departure time are confirmed for your date. Your camp guide meets you on arrival for a game-viewing transfer and your first look at the Mara's open grasslands. Meals and any further afternoon drive are planned around the flight. Your stay at Entim, Ilkeliani or Ashnil Mara is the base for reserve game drives over the next two days.

Head into Maasai Mara National Reserve for morning and afternoon drives, or spend the day out with a picnic arranged by camp. Your guide searches the grasslands and riverine cover for lions, cheetahs and leopards, stopping with the animals you find. During migration season, the route also follows the herds' current location. A sunrise balloon flight over the Mara can be booked as an optional extra, subject to availability and weather. All game drives today are planned in the reserve.

Spend another full day exploring the reserve, giving your guide time to try a different area or return to an interesting sighting. River routes can bring hippos, crocodiles and birdlife into the day's viewing. If migration herds are nearby, the guide plans around their movements; a river crossing is a natural event and cannot be promised. You can also ask about a separately priced community visit. Return to camp for your final safari dinner.

Have breakfast at camp and transfer to the airstrip for your included scheduled flight to Nairobi's Wilson Airport. Lunch is included today, with arrangements made around the flight and your onward plans. Your driver takes you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or an agreed Nairobi drop-off. We check the domestic arrival, road transfer and international check-in requirements before you commit to an onward flight; an additional Nairobi night can be quoted if the connection needs it.
