Kenya and Tanzania share the same iconic wildlife and the same Rift Valley ecosystem. The Maasai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania are essentially the same continuous wilderness: separated only by a political border. The wildebeest certainly do not recognise it.

But the experience of visiting each country feels quite different. Kenya is more accessible, more compact, and offers remarkable diversity within a single trip. Tanzania is larger, wilder-feeling, and home to some of the planet's most dramatic landscapes, from the Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti plains.

Combining Both

Our most popular itineraries do exactly this: crossing between Kenya and Tanzania within a single trip. A classic combination: fly from Nairobi into the Maasai Mara for 3–4 nights, cross to Serengeti for 2–3 nights, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, then either fly to Zanzibar for a beach close or back to Nairobi to connect onward.

Cost Comparison

Park entry fees have shifted the cost equation in 2027. The Maasai Mara now charges USD 200 per person per day: among the highest of any reserve in East Africa. The Serengeti sits at USD 180 per person per day, making Tanzania's northern circuit marginally more affordable on entry fees alone.

Where Tanzania adds cost is in logistics: fly-in transfers between Serengeti camps are almost always necessary (road distances are vast), and Tanzania's mandatory government taxes add a layer on top of accommodation. Kenya's road safari infrastructure is more developed, making it easier to do a quality safari by road at lower total cost.

At luxury level, both countries are comparable in camp quality and price. The deciding factor is rarely budget: it is timing, wildlife priorities, and how long you have. We can build a combined Kenya–Tanzania itinerary that optimises both.
