Travelling to Kenya in 2027: Safari Safety, Elections and What You Actually Need to Know

The national parks and wildlife reserves where safaris happen are far from the cities, and they have operated without disruption through every election cycle we've worked. We've run safaris in Kenya through 2017 and 2022 without ever having to cancel a trip. We can't promise what 2027 will look like, as no one can this far out, but we can promise this: we monitor conditions continuously, we maintain direct contacts with local authorities and security teams in every region we operate, and we've built our itineraries with the flexibility to reroute quickly if conditions ever shift close to your travel dates.

How Kenya's Elections Work

Kenya holds general elections every five years, always in August, overseen by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. The 2022 and 2017 elections both passed without disruption to tourism, and local and international observers have generally noted the growing professionalism of the process in recent cycles.

Election day itself tends to be calm. Political debate is lively in the run-up to voting, but the atmosphere across most of the country is orderly. Nairobi and other major cities see the most political activity. The wildlife parks see essentially none of it.

Where the Parks Are

This is the point most travel coverage misses. The Maasai Mara is a five-hour drive southwest of Nairobi, deep in the Rift Valley. Amboseli sits on the Tanzanian border. Samburu is in Kenya's north. Laikipia is a vast private conservancy well outside any urban centre. The Tsavo parks stretch across hundreds of kilometres of remote wilderness.

None of these are near polling stations, rallies, or city centres. Your vehicle, camp, and guide are, in practice, well insulated from election-day activity, and our on-ground network means we'd know first if that ever changed.

For clients who prefer to avoid long road transfers entirely, we also design fly-in itineraries. Kenya's parks have well-established airstrips right inside the reserve boundaries, and scheduled or private charter flights connect them directly. You step off the plane into the bush, with no city driving involved at any point.

What August 2027 Looks Like for Safari

August is genuinely one of the best months to visit Kenya, election year or not. The dry season is in full effect, skies are clear, and the Great Migration river crossings in the Maasai Mara are at or near their peak, with wildebeest and zebra pushing north from the Serengeti in vast columns. Big cat activity is exceptional: lion prides hunting daily, cheetahs visible on the open plains from morning onward.

If you're weighing August 2027 as a travel window, the wildlife calendar is one of the strongest arguments in its favour.

Completely understandable. For clients travelling in August 2027, we can build an itinerary that spends that specific window in Tanzania, Rwanda, or Uganda instead. The Serengeti is extraordinary in August, gorilla trekking in Bwindi runs year-round, and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is at its most atmospheric in the cooler months.

We can then bring you back into Kenya before or after the election for the second half of your trip. Amboseli in September, for example, offers some of the finest Kilimanjaro views of the year as the skies clear post-migration. It's easy to design around, if that's what gives you peace of mind.
