July, August and September 2027 sit in the heart of East Africa's peak safari season: the window when the Great Migration river crossings are at their most dramatic in the Maasai Mara and northern Serengeti. It is the most sought-after period on the safari calendar, and the finest camps have a fixed number of beds.

Across the industry, premium lodges and tented camps in the Mara Triangle, northern Serengeti, and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda are already fielding enquiries for 2027. Some of the most coveted properties: those with five or fewer tents positioned right on the Mara River: routinely sell out 12 to 18 months ahead. If a specific camp is on your list, waiting until next year is a genuine risk.

The Permits Problem

Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda cost USD 1,500 per person and are issued in strictly limited numbers each day: only a small number of visitors are allowed to visit any single gorilla family. For July and August 2027, those permits will begin selling months before your travel date.

The same applies to chimpanzee trekking in Uganda's Kibale Forest and golden monkey tracking in Rwanda. These are not experiences you can simply turn up for. They require advance booking, and the most popular trekking slots disappear well ahead of peak season.

What Summer 2027 Looks Like on the Ground

By late July 2027, the wildebeest herds will have pushed north from the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara. • What if my plans change? Most camps and operators offer date-change flexibility if you give sufficient notice. We recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation from the date of booking.
• Do I need to pay in full now? No: a deposit (typically 20–30%) secures your booking. The balance is usually due 60–90 days before travel.
• What if flight prices drop later? Book your safari first to lock in the camps, then watch flight prices. Airfare is more flexible than accommodation.
